Milton, Lower-tier municipality in Halton Region, Ontario, Canada.
Milton is a municipality in the western half of the Greater Toronto Area within Halton Region in Ontario. The town spreads across several residential neighborhoods and industrial areas connected by a creek called Sixteen Mile Creek that winds through the center and offers green spaces along its banks.
A settler named Jasper Martin built a grist mill on Sixteen Mile Creek in 1818 and laid the foundation for the later municipality. The settlement grew slowly through farming and trade until rapid expansion through housing and industry began in recent decades.
The name honors English poet John Milton and reflects the British roots of the community. Today residents gather in public parks and attend local events that shape life in a fast-growing suburb and help build connections between longtime settlers and newcomers arriving from across the region.
The GO Transit line offers train connections to Toronto, and several bus routes serve residential neighborhoods within the municipality. Drivers reach the town center via Main Street, where parking is available near shops and public facilities.
In just five years between 2006 and 2011 the population nearly doubled, making this town one of the fastest-growing municipalities in Canada. The expansion brought new schools, shopping centers and residential areas that fundamentally changed the appearance of the town and continue to shape it today.
