York University, Public research university in North York, Toronto, Canada.
York University is a public research institution located in the North York district of Toronto. The Keele campus brings together lecture halls, research centers, student residences and sports facilities across a sprawling area of open spaces and pathways.
The institution opened in 1959 with a small group of students in rented spaces before moving to the current North York location. Over the following decades, it grew through the addition of faculties and the construction of new buildings across the present grounds.
The connection to Indigenous communities appears in public acknowledgments of the traditional territories of the Anishinabek Nation and Haudenosaunee Confederacy. These acknowledgments form part of campus events and official activities throughout the academic year.
Eleven faculties offer programs across arts, sciences, business and engineering, with subway access linking the campus to downtown Toronto. Visitors can explore libraries, performance spaces and public areas that remain accessible outside of class hours and term schedules.
The Faculty of Science and Engineering develops technologies for Mars exploration and contributes to several NASA projects. This work includes both instrument design and scientific analysis that feed directly into space missions beyond Earth.
