Winnipeg Arena, Multi-purpose arena in Winnipeg, Canada
Winnipeg Arena was a multi-purpose venue in Winnipeg, Canada, designed to accommodate spectators across several tiers of seating for hockey matches and live concerts. The interior featured a central floor surrounded by rising sections, allowing views from every angle of the room.
The building opened in October 1955 following plans drawn up by architect Herbert Henry Gatenby Moody, responding to the needs of a growing city after the war. It remained in operation for over four decades before closing in 1996.
Home games brought together fans from across the city, who filled the stands wearing team colors and cheering for the Jets through every period. The same space transformed into a concert hall when touring musicians arrived, drawing crowds who came to hear rock, pop, and country acts perform under the same roof.
Visitors entered through several doorways located around the building, each leading to different seating sections and providing access to all levels. Stands selling refreshments and merchandise were located inside, allowing attendees to find what they needed during events.
The structure went up during a period when many North American cities were planning new sports facilities to meet growing interest in ice hockey. It remained active until a more modern replacement opened.
