Maryland Bridge, Twin bridge over Assiniboine River in Winnipeg, Canada
Maryland Bridge is a twin bridge spanning the Assiniboine River, connecting Academy Road with Maryland Street and Sherbrook Street. The two parallel structures work together to form a single transportation corridor serving the Winnipeg area.
The current structure was built in stages and completed between 1969 and 1970, making it the third bridge at this river crossing. Earlier versions from 1894 and 1921 had served the same transportation function before this modern design replaced them.
The bridge serves as a memorial site where red ribbons honor missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls across Manitoba. This symbolic use has given the crossing a deeper meaning beyond its role as a transportation route.
The bridge functions as a major transportation route through central Winnipeg and carries substantial daily traffic volume. Pedestrians and cyclists can also use dedicated pathways alongside the vehicle lanes for safe crossing.
The Angel Squad fundraiser has been held annually on the bridge since 1995, organized by the Misericordia Health Centre Foundation. This yearly event brings the community together for a cause while using the bridge as a focal point.
