Manitoba Hydro Place, Modern office tower in Downtown Winnipeg, Canada
Manitoba Hydro Place is a modern office tower in downtown Winnipeg featuring two connected wings with glass facades and integrated winter gardens. The 115-meter structure houses office space served by 11 elevators and connects to the Winnipeg Walkway pedestrian system.
Construction began in 2005 and the building opened in 2009, introducing a new approach to sustainable office design in Canada. The completion marked a shift in how large workplace buildings could manage energy and resources.
The building incorporates local Tyndall stone in its facade and creates a space where people naturally gather in the winter gardens and public areas. These shared spaces reflect how the design encourages everyday interaction and community use.
The building is easily accessible through the Winnipeg Walkway system, offering convenient connections throughout the downtown area. The winter gardens provide a comfortable place to visit regardless of the season.
The tower uses a geothermal system combined with bioclimatic design to achieve 77 percent higher energy efficiency than typical office buildings. This approach allows the building to store heat underground and rely on natural air movement for temperature control.
