201 Portage, Postmodern skyscraper in downtown Winnipeg, Canada.
201 Portage is a postmodern skyscraper in downtown Winnipeg, located at the corner of Portage Avenue and Main Street, standing 128 m (420 ft) tall. The tower has 34 floors and is clad in glass and metal, containing office space and broadcasting studios.
Construction started in 1988 and required demolishing the Childs Building, which had stood on that corner since 1909. The tower opened under the name TD Centre and has gone by 201 Portage ever since it was rebranded.
The tower houses broadcasting studios, which means local radio and television content is produced right inside the building. People passing through the lobby on a weekday may notice media crews moving between floors alongside office workers.
The tower sits at one of Winnipeg's most central intersections and is easy to reach on foot from most downtown points. It connects to the city's indoor pedestrian walkway system, which lets people move between buildings without going outside, a real advantage during cold winters.
201 Portage is considered the tallest building across a wide region covering several Canadian provinces beyond Manitoba. On a clear day, its roofline can be spotted from far out on the flat prairie land surrounding the city.
