Northumberland County, county in Ontario, Canada

Northumberland County is a county in Ontario located on the north shore of Lake Ontario, comprising several towns and communities spread across the landscape. The area features a mix of historic town centers, farmland, forests, two provincial parks, and waterfront areas connected by trails and roads.

The county was established in 1792 and settled by immigrants from Ireland, Scotland, and England, with some people arriving from the United States. In 1850 it merged with neighboring Durham County, but the arrangement changed in 1974 when part of Durham became a separate regional municipality and Port Hope rejoined the county.

The name Northumberland comes from the English county and reflects the origins of early settlers who came from Britain. Today the towns and villages maintain a strong sense of community life, where local festivals, markets, and family gatherings shape how people experience their surroundings throughout the year.

The county is about an hour and a half drive from Toronto and three hours from Ottawa, with a car being the main way to travel around, although VIA Rail offers limited train service. Allow plenty of time to explore between scattered communities and use well-marked roads and trails to reach the various parks, beaches, and town centers.

The Ganaraska Forest contains over 300 kilometers of mountain biking trails, making it a surprisingly large outdoor playground that many visitors overlook. The network of old forest roads and paths attracts outdoor enthusiasts who find challenging terrain and forest scenery in a region often known mainly for its lakes.
