Grey Nuns' Hospital, Former hospital and national historic site in Old Montreal, Canada.
Grey Nuns' Hospital is a three-story stone building on Saint-Pierre Street with tall casement windows and gable roofs. It displays French Canadian features with solid masonry and side additions that expanded space for patient care.
Founded in 1747, this site operated as a hospital under the Sisters of Charity for more than a century. After 1871, the sisters relocated their medical work to a new facility elsewhere in the city.
The Grey Nuns offered medical care to people of all social backgrounds without distinction. Their work shaped how healthcare became available to everyone in the community.
The building sits in Old Montreal and is easily accessible by public transportation. Visitors can explore the exterior and surroundings freely as this is a protected heritage site.
It is the only surviving structure from the original complex and preserves design ideas from the 18th century. The architecture still shows how hospitals were planned for practical function in that era.
