Lac au Sorcier, lake in Saint-Alexis-des-Monts, Mauricie, Canada
Lac au Sorcier is a reservoir near Saint-Alexis-des-Monts surrounded by forests and gentle hills with a calm water surface. The water reaches depths over 50 meters in places and is bordered by natural shorelines with a few small docks and picnic spots.
The lake became part of the Mastigouche wildlife reserve in 1971 and received additional protection through the creation of the Basses-Collines-du-Lac-au-Sorcier biodiversity reserve in 2008. This protected status has helped preserve the wild surroundings and maintain water quality.
The name "Lac au Sorcier" comes from an old legend about a sorcerer that locals still mention today. Fishing traditions remain important to visitors and residents, shaping how the place is used and valued in daily life.
The lake has walking trails and picnic areas that are easy to access and good for quiet walks through the forest. In winter the surface freezes over, allowing ice activities, but most visitors come during warmer months when conditions are more comfortable.
The lake operates under strict fishing rules where only 5 canoes can be on the water daily and a lottery system controls access before the end of March each year. These measures protect wildlife while creating a special sense of exclusivity for those who gain permission.
