Aldred Building, Art Deco skyscraper in Old Montreal, Canada.
The Aldred Building is a 23-story commercial tower in the Art Deco style rising to about 97 meters, combining limestone, aluminum spandrels, and marble accents throughout. Its construction integrates a steel frame with terra-cotta tiles, while modern elevators handle the flow of people between office levels.
Construction began in 1929 and finished in 1931, responding to new height regulations the city had enacted. The project emerged during a period of economic growth when Montreal was reshaping its skyline with modern structures.
The building was designed to respect the neighboring Notre-Dame Basilica by echoing its architectural lines in its own form. The stepped setbacks on its upper floors create a conversation between this modern commercial structure and the sacred monument beside it.
The building stands at Place d'Armes in the heart of Old Montreal and is easy to reach. Whether exploring public areas or visiting offices, the entrance is clearly marked and the lobby is comfortable to move through.
The building rests on a concrete mat foundation beneath street level, an invisible engineering solution that allows it to stand in such a central location. This foundation method was innovative construction technique for its time.
