The English Pug and the French Poodle, Bronze sculptures in Place d'Armes, Montreal, Canada.
The English Pug and the French Poodle are two bronze figures standing on opposite corners of a building at Place d'Armes, each holding a different dog breed. The statues rise several meters high and gaze in different directions across the square.
These bronze figures were created in 2013 by Canadian artist Marc-André J Fortier. They emerged as an artistic response to the long history of interaction between English-speaking and French-speaking populations in Montreal.
The sculptures show an English man and a French woman each looking in different directions while holding different dog breeds. This pairing reflects how two communities live side by side in this city.
The sculptures are located at the corner of rue Notre-Dame Ouest and rue Saint-Jacques and are easy to spot from the street. The square is a public area you can visit anytime to view the works from different angles.
The two dogs gaze at each other while their owners look in completely opposite directions and ignore each other. This small detail invites visitors to look closely at the figures and form their own thoughts about the relationship between the two communities.
