Strathcona Park, Public park in Sandy Hill, Ottawa, Canada
Strathcona Park is a 15-acre green space along the west bank of the Rideau River with a prominent fountain positioned on a raised area. The park offers open lawns, a baseball diamond, play structures, and slopes for sledding in winter.
The land was originally the Dominion Rifle Range where soldiers trained before departing for the Second Boer War. It was transformed into a park between 1904 and 1907, establishing its present form.
The fountain at the center displays four figures representing continents in classical European style and was donated in 1909. Visitors often gather around it, making it a focal point where people naturally stop to look and rest.
The park is easy to access from neighboring streets and connects to Vanier via the Adàwe Crossing bridge over the Rideau River. Different areas suit different activities depending on the season, so it helps to explore and see what fits your visit.
Since 1986 the Odyssey Theatre has performed open-air classical plays here each summer, featuring puppetry and dance theatre from different countries on a stage in the northeast corner. These performances bring theatre into the outdoor setting and draw a regular audience throughout the warm months.
