Big Cove YMCA Camp, Summer youth camp in Sutherlands River, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Big Cove YMCA Camp is a summer residential facility on a peninsula along Merigomish Harbour near Sutherlands River. The grounds contain ocean shorelines, forests, fields, and salt marshes, with a dining pavilion, waterfront activity areas, an archery range, a high ropes course with zip line, and ocean canoes available for use.
The facility was established in 1889 by the YMCA of Greater Halifax and Dartmouth, making it Canada's oldest continuously operating residential camp. This heritage has shaped how the programs and traditions function today.
Each session ends with a ceremonial campfire where the Keeper of the Cove gives gifts to participants as they leave. This tradition creates a meaningful goodbye and helps campers feel part of a larger community.
The property is easily accessible with plenty of open space for outdoor activity and exploration. The summer months offer the best experience when all facilities are operational and weather conditions are ideal.
The Leadership Program offers 27-day immersive experiences where teenagers stay in tipis and take extended canoe trips along Nova Scotia's coast. These multi-day paddling expeditions let participants experience the coastline in ways most visitors never do.
