Central Park, Urban park in downtown Winnipeg, Canada
Central Park is an urban green space in downtown Winnipeg located between Notre Dame Avenue, Ellice Avenue, Donald Street, and Balmoral Street. It features a large splash pad, soccer field, toboggan slide, interactive sand play area, and the notable Waddell Fountain.
The park was established in 1893 when the Winnipeg Public Parks Board acquired the land from the Hudson's Bay Company and transformed its swampy terrain into one of the city's first green spaces. This development supported the growth of the downtown area.
The park sits at the heart of a neighborhood home to large African, Filipino, and Indigenous communities that shape daily life in central Winnipeg. Visitors passing through can sense how these communities have made this area their own.
The park is accessible during daylight hours and offers easy paths connecting its various facilities for all ages. Summer months are best for enjoying the splash pad and outdoor equipment in full operation.
The Waddell Fountain was built in 1914 under an unusual condition in Emily Waddell's will that required her husband to construct it before he could remarry. This odd legacy remains one of the park's most talked-about features.
