Dominion House, Heritage tavern in Sandwich district, Windsor, Canada
Dominion House is a two-and-a-half-story Georgian building on Sandwich Street with traditional architectural elements and original timber-frame construction. It operates as a tavern and preserves its historical English pub design in the interior.
This establishment was founded in 1880 and is the oldest continuously operating tavern in Essex County. It served as a key stop on the stagecoach route between Windsor and Amherstburg.
The tavern draws law students and university staff who gather here because of its proximity to Mackenzie Hall and the University of Windsor. The space has naturally become a meeting point for these communities.
The building is located at the eastern edge of the Sandwich community and is easy to reach. The interior with its traditional English pub design offers an environment that has long appealed to visitors.
The basement contains tunnels from the prohibition era, when the building also housed workers during the Ambassador Bridge construction. These underground spaces are a hidden record of a remarkable period in the region's history.
