Le Château Apartments, Residential building in Golden Square Mile, Montreal, Canada
Le Château Apartments is a residential building on Sherbrooke Street West in Montreal constructed with Tyndall limestone and copper roofing. The structure contains 14 stories with 136 units distributed across multiple levels.
The building was designed by architects Ross and Macdonald in 1925 and completed in 1926, originally built for the owner of La Presse newspaper. It emerged during a boom of luxury residential projects in this wealthy area of Montreal.
This building displays the French château style that wealthy Montrealers favored during the 1920s. The Scottish Baronial touches and ornate stonework remain visible today on this busy downtown street.
The building sits in a central neighborhood with good access to public transit and pedestrian traffic. The surrounding area offers many shops and restaurants, making it an active place for visitors to explore.
The limestone facade contains visible fossils from an ancient sea that covered Manitoba before the last ice age. These petrified remains tell a story from a time long before modern Montreal existed.
