Le Château Apartments, Residential building in Golden Square Mile, Montreal, Canada

Le Château Apartments is a 12- to 14-storey apartment block at the corner of Sherbrooke Street West and Rue de la Montagne in Montreal's Golden Square Mile. Ross and Macdonald designed it in the châteauesque style, modelled on French châteaux and Scottish fortified houses. Its steel frame holds 136 apartments, clad in Tyndall limestone from Garson, Manitoba, with a copper roof and most architectural details in Indiana limestone.

The building was designed by architects Ross and Macdonald in 1925 and completed in 1926, originally built for the owner of La Presse newspaper. It emerged during a boom of luxury residential projects in this wealthy area of Montreal.

This building displays the French château style that wealthy Montrealers favored during the 1920s. The Scottish Baronial touches and ornate stonework remain visible today on this busy downtown street.

Le Château Apartments occupies a corner lot at Sherbrooke Street West and Rue de la Montagne, in the Golden Square Mile of Downtown Montreal. The building is private housing, so visitors see it from the street; the Tyndall limestone facade and copper roof are best viewed from the opposite sidewalk.
