Mississauga Library System, öffentliche Bibliothek in Kanada
The Mississauga Library System is a network of public library branches in Mississauga, Ontario, distributed across many neighborhoods throughout the city. The Hazel McCallion Central Library is the main branch and occupies four floors with books, maps, and dedicated study areas.
The network was founded in 1956 and has grown steadily since then into one of the larger library systems in Ontario. The central library opened in 1991 and, after major renovations, welcomed visitors again in late 2023.
The central branch is named after Hazel McCallion, who served as mayor of Mississauga for over three decades and remains a celebrated figure in the city. Across the branches, locals gather for author talks, reading groups, and neighborhood programs that bring together people from many different backgrounds.
Some branches are housed in buildings shared with schools or community centers, so they can be easy to combine with other stops in the neighborhood. Most locations are open during the week with shorter hours on weekends and closures on public holidays.
The network runs a seed library where residents can borrow seeds to grow plants at home, which is a service found in only a handful of public libraries across the country. It also operates the Open Window Hub, a space inside one of the branches set aside for people without housing or those facing mental health challenges.
