Sgt. Aubrey Cosens VC Memorial Bridge, Military memorial bridge in Latchford, Canada
The Sgt. Aubrey Cosens VC Memorial Bridge is a through arch bridge that crosses the Montreal River along Highway 11 in northern Ontario. The structure features a distinctive curved steel span designed to support vehicle traffic across the waterway.
The bridge opened in 1960 and underwent major reconstruction in 2005 following structural damage from metal fatigue that occurred two years earlier. This recovery reflected the need to maintain this vital transportation route.
The memorial plaques honor a Canadian soldier who earned the Victoria Cross for bravery in World War II. Visitors can read these inscriptions on both sides as they cross, learning about his wartime service.
The bridge is part of the Trans-Canada Highway and provides year-round access for vehicles crossing the Montreal River. Note that this is a highway crossing designed for vehicular traffic, so walking across is not practical or safe.
Before this bridge was built, the nearby Latchford Dam served as the crossing point for vehicles heading south. This earlier route highlights how transportation evolved in this remote northern region.
