Quebec City Martello Towers

The Quebec City Martello Towers comprise three military structures with thick stone walls, elevated gun platforms, and strategic positions overlooking the St. Lawrence River.

Between 1808 and 1812, British engineers constructed these towers as a defensive measure against potential American invasions following the War of 1812.

The towers contain interpretive exhibits detailing military strategies, architectural innovations, and the evolution of Canadian defense systems through the nineteenth century.

Visitors can access Towers No. 1 and No. 2, which feature educational displays about military engineering and defense tactics of early colonial Canada.

Each tower incorporates specific architectural elements, including thicker walls facing away from the city and high entrances designed to prevent enemy access.
