Opfikon, municipality in Switzerland
Opfikon is a small town in the Zurich canton, located about 9 miles northeast of Zurich city. The area spans relatively flat terrain and is marked by the Glatt River zone, with residential neighborhoods, parks, forests, and farmland.
Opfikon developed from two original settlements: Opfikon on the Glatt River and Oberhusen on the opposite side. During Napoleon's era, these areas were reorganized administratively but later merged back together. Since the 1950s, the town grew rapidly, especially in the 1980s, as immigrants from many countries reshaped the community.
The name Opfikon comes from ancient words meaning 'settlement of followers of a man named Opfo'. Today, the town reflects the diversity of its residents, with people from Portugal, the Balkans, Turkey, India, and the Middle East shaping everyday life. This international mix is visible in the shops, restaurants, and streets, where many languages are spoken.
Opfikon has excellent transport connections with two train stations and rail links that reach central Zurich in about 11 minutes. Buses and a tram line additionally connect the town with the regional network, making it easy to explore the surrounding area or visit Zurich.
Opfikon sits directly next to Zurich Airport, making it possible to spot planes from many locations throughout the town. Despite aircraft noise, the town has become a livable residential area that attracts people who value proximity to international travel connections.
