Ferpècle Glacier, Alpine glacier in Val d'Hérens, Switzerland
Ferpècle Glacier is a body of ice in the Valais Alps situated between two prominent peaks. The frozen expanse slopes downward through an alpine valley and terminates at a ridge with clear views across the surrounding peaks.
Centuries ago, an ancient path crossed this mountain region to connect distant valleys on opposite sides of the Alps. This route served traders and travelers moving between different alpine communities.
The valley communities here have long shaped their way of life around the glacial landscape and mountain rhythms. Local practices and seasonal patterns remain tied to the presence of ice and meltwater flowing through the region.
The starting point is the valley below, from where hikers can climb on a marked path toward the ice. Most visitors need around an hour to reach the lower edge of the glacier from the main trailhead.
The water from the melting ice feeds a stream that eventually joins a major river flowing through the wider region. This water system creates a direct link between the high ice and the lower valleys.
