Glaubenberg Pass, Mountain pass in Central Switzerland
Glaubenberg Pass is a mountain pass in central Switzerland reaching 1543 meters in elevation, connecting the regions of Obwalden and the Emmental Valley. The road passes through rolling alpine meadows and wetlands that shape the landscape on both sides of the ridge.
The pass has served as a trade route since Medieval times, when merchants and herders moved livestock and goods across the mountains using pack animals. This long-standing connection shaped how the surrounding communities developed on both sides of the ridge.
The moor landscape around the pass is one of the largest in Switzerland and shapes the area with boggy meadows and special plants that visitors notice right away.
The road closes from November through April, with winter access limited to the lower elevations where walking and cross-country skiing trails start. Most visitors travel here in late spring and summer when the pass is reliably open for driving.
Near the pass once stood Kaltbad, a cold mineral spring that people visited in the 1600s to soak for gout and skin ailments. The name itself means cold bath, a fitting description of water so chilly that few could tolerate it for long.
