Klöntalersee, Reservoir in Glarus, Switzerland

The Klöntalersee extends for 5 kilometers through the Klöntal valley, reaching depths of 49 meters and reflecting the surrounding mountains in its surface.

The construction of the dam in 1908 transformed this natural lake into Switzerland's first hydroelectric reservoir, increasing its volume for power generation.

The lake's waters supplied ice to local communities until 1953, when mechanical ice production methods replaced the traditional winter harvesting practice.

Visitors can reach the lake by taking trains from Zürich to Glarus, followed by buses 72 or 504 to the Klöntal stops near the water.

The lake's position at 848 meters elevation creates specific conditions for ice diving activities during winter months, attracting specialized diving groups.

Location: Canton of Glarus

Elevation above the sea: 848 m

GPS coordinates: 47.02583,8.98056
