Ceneri Base Tunnel, High-speed railway tunnel in Ticino, Switzerland
The Ceneri Base Tunnel is a railway passage through the Swiss Alps connecting the towns of Vigana and Vezia with two side-by-side single-track tubes. Each tube stretches roughly 15 kilometers through the mountainous terrain beneath the landscape.
Construction started in mid-2006 and the two tubes first connected underground in early 2015. The tunnel began regular service a few years later, transforming rail travel through this Alpine region.
The tunnel represents Switzerland's dedication to railway infrastructure development, forming part of the New Rail Link through the Alps to enhance European connectivity.
Trains run through the tunnel frequently during the day, so you may notice train sounds or vibrations if you are nearby. It is important to know that the tunnel itself is not accessible to pedestrians and can only be experienced by traveling by train.
The tunnel includes connecting passages that allow trains to switch from one tube to the other when needed, positioned at regular intervals. These passages serve both operational flexibility and emergency response throughout the passage.
