Soglio, Former municipality and protected village in Bregaglia, Switzerland

Soglio is a village in the Bregaglia region of Switzerland, sitting on a natural terrace at about 3,575 feet (1,090 meters) above sea level, and is listed as a cultural property and Swiss townscape worthy of protection. Its narrow lanes are lined with old stone houses, and the view opens toward the granite peaks of Val Bondasca and a distant glacier.

The name Soglio first appears in written records as Solio in 1186, and the von Salis family shaped the village deeply after settling here during the Middle Ages. The Palazzo Salis was built in 1630, expanded in 1701, and later renovated in a style fashionable toward the end of the 18th century.

The Palazzo Salis, a 17th-century manor house on the edge of the village, has been welcoming guests as a hotel since 1876. Its rooms are furnished with old furniture, suits of armor, and fireplaces, giving it the feel of a lived-in family home.

The village is not easy to reach by car, and parking is very limited, so it is best to leave the car in a nearby town such as Vicosoprano or Stampa and take the bus. The best time to visit is in autumn, when the chestnut trees change color and the light grows softer.

The painter Giovanni Segantini called Soglio the threshold to paradise, a phrase still associated with the village today. The garden of the Palazzo Salis also contains tall sequoia trees, which are unexpected to find in a small mountain village at this altitude.
