Rofla Gorge, Natural gorge in Grisons, Switzerland.
Rofla Gorge is a rocky chasm in Grisons carved by the Hinterrhein River, with sheer cliff faces rising on both sides. A walking path winds through the narrow passage beneath cascading water, creating a dramatic passage through the mountains.
The gorge formed a natural barrier for travelers crossing toward the Splügen and San Bernardino mountain passes for centuries. In the early 1900s, a footpath was constructed to provide direct passage through this previously impassable terrain.
The Via Spluga hiking path traverses through the gorge, connecting different regions and offering visitors insights into the local geological formations.
The walking route is relatively easy to navigate and starts from the entrance hotel building. Wear appropriate footwear since parts of the path become wet and slippery from the water flow.
Hidden beneath the valley sits a power station that harnesses the river's flow to generate electricity. Few visitors realize that this gorge actively contributes to the region's energy supply while they walk through.
