Schwägalp Pass, Mountain pass in Eastern Switzerland.
Schwägalp Pass is a mountain passage in Eastern Switzerland that connects Nesslau-Neu St. Johann in Toggenburg with Urnäsch. The road climbs through alpine landscapes at 1,278 meters elevation, and a cable car at the pass transports visitors to the Säntis summit at 2,502 meters.
The road over the pass opened in 1935 to connect the cantons of St. Gallen and Appenzell Ausserrhoden. This project improved access between the two regions and their communities.
Farmers use the high meadows to graze cattle and produce cheese during the summer season. The landscape shows traditional mountain farmsteads and the sounds of grazing herds are part of the daily rhythm here.
The road has steep sections with gradients up to 12 percent, so careful driving is important. Visitors can reach the area on foot, by bicycle, or by car depending on which route they choose.
The pass offers several different cycling routes with varying difficulty levels for riders. An alternative western route reaches 1,365 meters and provides cyclists with an easier option to explore the area.
