Gross Lohner

Gross Lohner, Limestone mountain summit in Bernese Oberland, Switzerland

Gross Lohner is a limestone mountain in the Bernese Oberland reaching 3,049 meters, with several peaks including Mittler Lohner, Hinder Lohner, and Mittaghorn spread across its massif. The structure features diverse ridge routes for climbers with varying technical demands on each approach.

Mountain guides Ogi and Hari completed the first documented ascent in 1875, with Carl Durheim arriving as the first tourist climber the following year. These early ascents established the foundation for climbing routes that developed in the following decades.

The mountain area between Adelboden and Kandersteg reflects traditional Swiss climbing practices that remain visible in the established routes and shelters today. Climbers who visit continue to follow patterns of movement and rest that have developed over many generations.

The climb requires experience and proper gear for technical rock work on the various routes available. The Lohnerhütte on the western side offers a resting point for those planning a full-day ascent.

Large scree fields cover much of the upper slopes and require careful navigation when approaching Mittler Lohner. Many visitors underestimate the effort needed to cross these loose rock sections, making it a memorable part of the climb.
