Dhammapala, Buddhist monastery in Kandersteg, Switzerland
Dhammapala is a Buddhist monastery in Kandersteg situated at about 1200 meters (3900 feet) elevation in the Swiss Alps, within the canton of Bern. The grounds accommodate meditation practice and are maintained by a small resident community that regularly receives visitors.
The monastery was founded in 1988 under the guidance of Ajahn Thiradhammo and relocated to its current location in 1991. Official inauguration took place the following year.
The monastery follows the Thai Forest Tradition of Theravada Buddhism, and visitors can observe meditation practices that shape daily life here. The rhythm of monastic routines creates a space centered on inner work and contemplation.
Visitors should plan their arrival for Mondays or Fridays, as the monastery is more open to guests outside the winter period from January to March. It helps to contact ahead and confirm a visit can be arranged.
The monastery has just a handful of monks living permanently, giving the place a quiet and intimate character. This small size lets guests focus on practice without the distraction of large crowds.
