Planetenweg Weissenstein, Educational solar system trail at Mount Weissenstein, Switzerland
The Planetenweg Weissenstein is an educational trail in the Jura mountains featuring scale models of planets and moons positioned to show their actual distances in space. The route displays the entire solar system at a one-to-one-billion scale, where each meter on the path represents one million kilometers in space.
The trail was created to make space distances understandable through a mathematical scale, guiding visitors across the mountains while teaching astronomy. This combination of hiking and learning has made the site an important destination for schools and people interested in nature.
The central pillar displays the word sun in thirty different languages, showing how this celestial body holds meaning across all human communities. This range of languages shows that people everywhere have always looked up at the sun as something fundamental to life.
The complete trail takes about one and a half hours and runs from Weissenstein through Hasenmatt to Stallflue with information panels at each model. The route requires normal hiking gear and is well marked, with visitors able to start from different entry points.
The trail combines hiking with space exploration in an unexpected way, making the vast distances of the cosmos suddenly feel physical and real. As visitors walk through the landscape, they naturally grasp how far apart the planets truly are from one another.
