Gempenturm, Steel observation tower in Gempen, Switzerland
The Gempenturm is a steel observation tower standing on the Gempen plateau near Arlesheim with five viewing floors reached by internal stairways. Its lattice frame structure allows unobstructed views from the 28-meter summit in every direction.
Built in 1897, the tower became an early landmark drawing visitors to explore the Basel-Landschaft region. Its construction reflected the growth of tourism and infrastructure development in Switzerland during that period.
The tower serves as a meeting point for local cyclists and hikers who gather to start their journeys through the surrounding natural landscapes.
The tower is accessible from surrounding villages like Arlesheim through established walking and cycling routes. The stairways and platforms are designed for general visitor mobility without special requirements.
On clear days, visitors from the observation platform can see across three countries: the Vosges mountains in France and Germany's Black Forest alongside Swiss terrain. This wide panorama attracts photographers and bird watchers who return repeatedly.
