Rossstock, Mountain summit in Uri and Schwyz, Switzerland
Rossstock is a mountain summit reaching about 2,460 meters (8,070 feet) in Uri and Schwyz cantons. The peak sits east of Lake Lucerne and is connected by marked trails that pass through valleys between Muotathal and Unterschächen with varying grades and terrain types.
The mountain attracted climbers and surveyors during the early period of Swiss mountaineering. Its position on the border between Uri and Schwyz made it a key reference point when establishing cantonal boundaries in this region.
The name Rossstock comes from Swiss German, where "Ross" means horse and "Stock" means peak, reflecting how local mountain communities named their landmarks. This naming tradition shows how everyday words from valley life became part of the alpine geography.
The approach starts from Sissikon railway station, then a bus takes you to the starting point at Chäppliberg. The parking area near Chäppliberg has a cable car station that helps with the initial ascent.
Among 300 peaks in Schwyz canton, Rossstock ranks 35th by prominence, while in Uri canton it places 25th among 212 summits, showing its significant standing in the regional mountain landscape.
