Schweizersbild, Rock shelter and archaeological site in Herblingen district, Schaffhausen, Switzerland.
Schweizersbild is a rock shelter with a 16-meter high limestone wall at the base of two rock formations near a natural spring. The site spans roughly 60 square meters and sits on a steep limestone slope with numerous climbing routes.
A researcher discovered this site in 1891 and conducted extensive excavations revealing campsite remains from roughly 12000 years ago. The settlement traces belong to hunters who lived here during the late ice age.
The site is named after an early researcher and displays crafted objects from the reindeer hunting era, including flint and bone tools as well as a small artwork carved from jet.
The site is accessible to visitors wanting to explore the archaeological remains, while climbers can use the steep limestone routes in the surrounding area. Sturdy footwear is recommended due to the uneven terrain and rocky paths.
Excavations uncovered bones from ice-age animals including reindeer, wild horses, and remains of a woolly rhinoceros. These findings reveal the site was a major hunting location in a frozen landscape.
