Place Saint-François, Square in Lausanne, Switzerland
Place Saint-François is a square in the center of Lausanne, Switzerland, with the Saint-François church at its center. The square is a hub for public transport and has a pedestrian area with shops and cafes.
The Franciscans built a church and convent here in the 13th century. After the Reformation, the convent was demolished, and in the 19th century the square became a busy transport hub with the construction of the Grand-Pont.
The square is named after the church of Saint-François, which stands at its center. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, part of the city market takes place here, and in December the Christmas market fills the pedestrian area.
The square is easy to reach on foot or by public transport, with many bus and trolleybus lines stopping there. The pedestrian area around the church is flat and accessible, and the market on Wednesdays and Saturdays is worth a visit.
The square is built on the site of the old city walls, and parts of the medieval ramparts were destroyed to make room for the church. The pedestrian tunnel under the square connects directly to the rue de la Grotte.
