Monte Rosa tour, mountain trail in the Alps

The Monte Rosa Tour is a multi-day trek through the Swiss and Italian Alps, covering approximately 170 kilometers as it circles the Monte Rosa massif. The route combines green valleys and farmland with rocky high-altitude sections, glaciers, and granite walls, allowing hikers to view seven of the ten highest mountain peaks in the Alps.

The first recorded tour around Monte Rosa dates to the 1850s, when travel guides by Mrs. Henry Warwick Cole described an eight-stage route based on her journeys between 1850 and 1858. She was among the first women to write about mountain trekking in the Alps, sharing her experiences and practical advice for future hikers.

The trail passes through traditional mountain villages where locals maintain old building styles and simple outdoor lifestyles. In places like Macugnaga and Gressoney, you can see how residents prepare hearty local dishes such as pasta, raclette, and fondue, and how they continue to work with the land as they have for generations.

The best time to hike this trail is from June to September, when snow has cleared from the passes and mountain huts are open. Hikers should book accommodation in advance, bring proper gear such as trekking poles and layered clothing, and consider hiring a guide for glacier crossings and safe navigation.

A lesser-known aspect is that some hikers can avoid the glacier crossing by using a cable car or taking alternative routes, making the trek accessible to those with less alpine experience. This flexibility allows walkers of different fitness levels to complete the circuit without the most technical sections.
