Santa Maria del Sasso Parish Church, Catholic parish church in Morcote, Switzerland
Santa Maria del Sasso is a Catholic parish church that overlooks the village of Morcote from a hillside above Lake Lugano. The building mixes rounded Romanesque forms with brighter Renaissance details, and its interior holds terracotta pillars, old frescoes, and a decorated altar.
The first church on this hill was raised in the 13th century after a stone statue of the Virgin Mary was reportedly found nearby. Major rebuilding in the late 1400s gave the structure its Renaissance form, and later work in the 1500s and 1700s added the choir, the staircase, and much of the interior decoration.
The staircase leading up to the building acts as an open-air nave, turning the climb into a repeated ritual for visitors and worshippers alike. Inside, the painted scenes on the walls and vaults still speak to local devotion, especially the figures of saints that watch over the side chapels.
Reaching the church means climbing a long outdoor staircase with hundreds of steps, so comfortable shoes and a slow pace help. Once at the top, take time to walk around the outside terraces before entering, because the hillside position gives clear views over the lake and rooftops.
The long staircase was built in two separate campaigns, with the upper section completed in the 1730s and the lower stretch added more than a century later. At the foot of the final section, a niche holds a statue of Giacomo Rossi, the local figure who oversaw part of that work.
