Tower of Stockalper

The Tower of Stockalper stands as a stone structure with multiple floors, featuring thick walls and traditional Alpine architectural elements at 1,359 meters elevation.

Baron Kaspar Stockalper constructed this tower in 1685 along the Simplon trading route, establishing a crucial checkpoint for merchants traveling between northern and southern Europe.

The structure represents the economic power of the Valais region during the 17th century and remains classified as a Swiss cultural property of regional significance.

Following renovation in 2007, the tower functions as a hotel with 11 rooms, offering seminar spaces and accommodations for travelers crossing the Swiss-Italian border.

This tower survived a devastating landslide in 2000 that destroyed much of Gondo, with only its oldest section remaining intact before comprehensive restoration.
