Alpe Veglia and Alpe Devero Natural Park, Regional natural park in Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Italy.
Alpe Veglia and Alpe Devero Natural Park covers two mountain basins with high-altitude meadows, glacial valleys, and peaks exceeding 2000 meters. A network of hiking paths crosses the area, passing streams, grasslands, and diverse mountain terrain.
This area was established in 1995 when two separate protected zones were merged together. The two individual nature parks had been created in 1978 and 1990 to conserve this mountain region.
Herders and farmers have shaped this mountain landscape for centuries, and they still use the meadows for their livestock today. You can see the marks of this way of life everywhere in the open grasslands and traditional farmhouses that define the valleys.
The park is well served by hiking trails of varying difficulty levels and has accommodation and a visitor center. The best time for hiking is from June through September, when the higher elevations are snow-free and accessible.
In 2014 a new mineral named Deveroite was discovered within the park and named after this area. The discovery shows just how geologically significant and interesting this mountain region is.
