Franklin University Switzerland, private higher education institution in Switzerland
Franklin University Switzerland is a private university on a hillside in Lugano, offering bachelor's degrees in arts and sciences and holding accreditation from both American and Swiss authorities. The campus occupies several buildings, including a renovated 19th-century villa and the McNeely Center, which opened in 2023 and contains classrooms, a library, and event spaces.
The institution was founded in 1969 under the name Fleming College and later renamed to its current title. The purchase of the main villa in 1985 gave the campus its recognizable shape, setting the foundation for the growth that followed in the decades after.
The university's name refers to Benjamin Franklin, who believed knowledge should be open to everyone. On campus, students from dozens of countries study together in English, making it a place where many languages and backgrounds meet every day.
The campus is reachable by train and bus from central Lugano, and the uphill stretch from the nearest stop can be walked or covered by local bus. A visit pairs well with exploring the surrounding area, since the city center and the lake are both a short distance away.
The university runs a publishing division that makes research freely available online, which is rare for a small private institution. It also organizes travel programs in which students journey with professors for roughly two weeks to study course topics at the places where they actually happened or exist.
