Piz Gannaretsch is a mountain in the Glarner Alps within Grisons canton, reaching about 3040 meters in elevation. The northwestern side features a glacier called Glatscher da Gannaretsch, while steep rock faces define the overall shape.
The mountain has been a geographical landmark between Lake Nalps and Lake Sontga Maria for centuries, shaping regional trade routes. Its position near major passes influenced how settlements and travel corridors developed across the region.
The name Piz Gannaretsch comes from the Romansh language, showing the linguistic variety of Grisons canton. In this region, several languages meet and shape how locals live and communicate.
Climbers reach the summit via multiple routes starting from Sedrun, with the best conditions occurring during summer months from June to September. At this time of year, the conditions are most favorable for experienced mountaineers with proper gear.
The mountain has a topographic isolation of about 5 kilometers and sits strategically between the Saint-Gotthard Pass and the Lukmanier Pass. This central position makes it a natural landmark between two major Alpine passages.
