Old hospice, Mountain hut in Simplon Pass, Switzerland
The rectangular stone building measures 64 meters by 20 meters and stands at an elevation of 1,998 meters above sea level in the Swiss Alps.
Napoleon Bonaparte commissioned the construction of this hospice in February 1801 to provide shelter for travelers crossing the newly built Geneva-Domodossola route.
The Canons Regular of the Grand-Saint-Bernard congregation maintain this Class A Swiss cultural property, continuing their tradition of welcoming travelers and pilgrims.
The structure contains facilities to accommodate up to three hundred beds, offering refuge to those traversing the mountain pass throughout the year.
In 1906, the hospice received electricity from a turbine system powered by water from the adjacent Rotelsch lake, marking early infrastructure development at high altitude.
