Luegibodenblock, Glacial erratic in Habkern, Switzerland
The Luegibodenblock is a massive granite stone in the Lombachtal valley, rising about 14 meters high and spanning roughly 28 by 31 meters across the ground. It sits as a single, remarkable stone in the mountainous landscape of the Bernese Oberland.
It became the first nature monument protected in Canton Bern in the 1800s, when people recognized its geological importance. Scientists and conservationists worked to preserve this stone as a landmark of natural science.
The name comes from an old vantage point where people could look out over the valley. This reflects how local residents connected the stone with the landscape around them.
The stone sits about one kilometer southeast of Habkern village at roughly 1100 meters elevation. Marked walking trails through the Lombachtal valley lead to the location, which is best reached on foot.
The stone is made of Habkern granite, material from an ancient mountain range that was exposed through valley erosion. This rare composition makes it especially valuable to geologists.
