Lokomotivdepot F, Railway roundhouse in Kreis 4, Zürich, Switzerland
Lokomotivdepot F is a railway roundhouse in Zurich's Kreis 4, featuring a 180-meter-long track hall with seven parallel rails. Two wing buildings house workshops and offices alongside the main structure.
The depot was built between 1898 and 1899 by the Swiss Northeastern Railway, which initially operated it. Later, the Swiss Federal Railways took over the facility and used it as a key maintenance station.
The red brick walls and cast iron supports reflect how Switzerland built industrial structures in the late 1800s, representing modern engineering and technical progress of that era. This style of construction became a signature of the country's industrial identity.
Access to the site is restricted since the depot remains in active operation, requiring prior permission to visit. Interested parties should contact the relevant authorities to explore visiting possibilities.
The facility was completely renovated in 2017 and 2018 while remaining fully operational, a remarkable logistical achievement. The track hall roof was replaced and all infrastructure modernized without interrupting daily railway operations.
