Japoma Sports Complex, football stadium in cameroon
Japoma Sports Complex is a large sports facility in Douala, Cameroon, featuring a stadium that seats 50,000 spectators, an Olympic-size swimming pool with eight lanes, tennis courts, basketball and volleyball courts, and handball facilities. A running track circles the main stadium and serves both athletes and community members for training and exercise.
Construction began in early 2017 and took approximately three years, managed by Leonardo Cameroun, an Italian company, with architectural design by a British firm. The stadium opened in 2020 and has since hosted international competitions including matches from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and the upcoming 2024 African Championships in Athletics.
The complex serves as a gathering place where the community's passion for football is on full display. Local food vendors operate from lightweight modules around the stadium, allowing visitors to experience regional dishes while watching matches.
The complex is built on a sloping site, which makes accessing seating areas easy and ensures good views from most positions around the field. A large parking lot near the main entrance provides ample space for vehicles and buses, with nearby shops and gathering areas for spectators before and after events.
Construction employed locally sourced materials, with precast concrete pieces made on-site using local stones and aggregates. The design allows rainwater to naturally seep into the ground, addressing Cameroon's frequent rains while connecting modern building practices with traditional local materials and forms.
