La Nouvelle Liberté, Contemporary sculpture at Rond Point Deido, Douala, Cameroon.
La Nouvelle Liberté is a metal sculpture made from recycled materials, standing 19 meters high and 5 meters wide at Rond Point Deido in Douala. The work is constructed from welded metal pieces forming an open framework that is visible from many directions.
The artwork was designed by artist Joseph-Francis Sumégné in 1996 and developed over several years before reaching its current form. Its official presentation took place in 2007 during the Douala Urban Exhibition, marking the project's completion.
The sculpture serves as a landmark where locals gather and meet in the heart of the city. It marks a place where different parts of the community come together and share the public space daily.
The monument sits at a main traffic junction where several roads meet and is easy to reach on foot. Visitors can view the structure from different positions since it stands freely accessible in open public space.
Local people initially called it 'Njo Njo of Deido', meaning monster in their language, because the unusual shape and raw materials caught their attention. This informal name showed how the community interpreted and claimed the artwork in their own way.
