Amah Rock, Rock formation in Sha Tin District, Hong Kong.
Amah Rock is a natural granite formation on a hilltop in Sha Tin District, Hong Kong. The structure rises about 15 meters high at an elevation of 250 meters and resembles a woman carrying a child on her back.
The rock took its current shape through erosion and weathering over thousands of years, with cracks in the granite defining its present outline. Wind and rain polished the surface and carved the contours that now suggest a human figure.
Local folklore tells of a fisherman's wife who climbed the hill daily with her child, waiting for her husband's return until lightning transformed them into stone.
You can reach the rock formation through hiking trails in Lion Rock Country Park, with several routes starting from Sha Tin New Town. The climb requires good fitness and sturdy footwear, as paths can be steep and uneven in places.
The rock won first place in the 2007 Hong Kong Beautiful Rocks Election, where residents voted on geological formations across the territory. The poll highlighted the connection between natural landmarks and local identity.
