Amah Rock, Rock formation in Sha Tin District, Hong Kong

Amah Rock is a natural granite formation on a hilltop in Sha Tin District, Hong Kong. The structure rises about 15 meters high at an elevation of 250 meters and resembles a woman carrying a child on her back.

The rock took its current shape through erosion and weathering over thousands of years, with cracks in the granite defining its present outline. Wind and rain polished the surface and carved the contours that now suggest a human figure.

The name Mong Fu Shek means "husband-watching stone". In one telling, a poor village woman who had lost her parents climbed the hill daily with her two sons to scan the sea for her absent husband; a storm of wind, rain and lightning broke, the three vanished, and a boulder in their likeness stood where they had watched. The rock is a place of worship for Chinese women and a symbol of loyalty.

You can reach the rock formation through hiking trails in Lion Rock Country Park, with several routes starting from Sha Tin New Town. The climb requires good fitness and sturdy footwear, as paths can be steep and uneven in places.

The 2007 poll that placed Amah Rock first was called "Cherish the Natural Beauty of Rocks: Hong Kong's Most Beautiful Rocks Election". The rock stands about 15 metres tall, and its "mother" neck and "child" come from horizontal joints in the granite, while the body follows vertical joints.
