Shaximiao Formation

The Shaximiao Formation is a Jurassic-age rock layer in Sichuan Province composed of purple-red mudstones and siltstones alternating with sandstone beds. These deposits contain abundant dinosaur fossils and remains of other organisms from the early Jurassic period.

The formation was first exposed in 1972 through construction work that revealed dinosaur bones. Systematic excavations over the following decades established it as one of the most important vertebrate fossil sites from this period.

The Zigong Dinosaur Museum displays numerous specimens from the formation, making paleontological discoveries accessible to researchers and visitors from around the world.
