Puji Temple

Puji Temple is a Buddhist sanctuary on Putuoshan Island comprising multiple halls and pavilions arranged along a central axis. The Yuantong Hall houses a statue of the goddess Guanyin standing over 8.8 meters tall, which serves as the focal point of the entire complex.

A Japanese monk named Hui'e established this sanctuary in 916 after leaving behind a statue during a storm. This founding event connected the island to early maritime exchanges between Japan and the Chinese coast.

The temple serves as a living place of worship where visitors can observe monks conducting daily ceremonies and rituals. People come here to participate in meditation or seek spiritual guidance within the Buddhist tradition.

Visitors reach this sanctuary by ferry from the mainland city of Zhoushan to Putuoshan Island, with regular service throughout the day. The route is straightforward, making it accessible for most travelers seeking to explore the religious complex.

A pond in front of the main building displays rare five-colored lotus flowers visible throughout the year. This natural feature remains relatively overlooked by many visitors despite adding a subtle beauty to the grounds.
