Central Market, Historic marketplace in Central District, Hong Kong
Central Market is a four-story Bauhaus building in the Central District of Hong Kong that now houses shops, restaurants, and exhibition areas. High ceilings and large windows allow daylight to fill the spacious halls, while sections of the original red brick walls remain visible throughout.
This site opened in 1842 as Canton Bazaar, one of Hong Kong's earliest marketplaces. The current building was finished in 1938 and served as a food market for decades before closing and later reopening as a cultural venue.
The building incorporates 500 traditional red lamp shades, a grand staircase with hanging clock, and multiple spaces dedicated to local art exhibitions.
The building stands at 93 Queen's Road Central and opens daily from 10 AM to 10 PM with restaurants and shops on multiple floors. A wide staircase and elevators connect all levels, and most areas are accessible without difficulty.
Around 500 red lampshades hang from the ceilings and give the interior a warm glow. A large standing clock hangs above the main staircase and recalls the days when fresh goods were sold here every morning.
