Man Yee Building, Commercial skyscraper in Central, Hong Kong
Man Yee Building is a commercial skyscraper in Central, Hong Kong, rising 35 floors with a glass facade. Its lower levels house a four-floor shopping arcade, and three basement floors connect directly to the MTR station below.
The original structure on this site was built in 1957 and was the first building in Hong Kong to have escalators. It was fully demolished and rebuilt in 1999, giving way to the current tower.
The building sits at the heart of Hong Kong's financial district, drawing bankers, lawyers, and workers from international firms every day. The shopping arcade at its base serves the daily needs of this working crowd, with a mix of local eateries and small shops.
The building is easy to reach on foot or by metro, as it connects directly to the MTR network from its lower floors. It also links to the elevated walkway system in Central, so you can move through the area without going outside.
The original building was home to the last manually operated Otis elevators in Hong Kong, which needed trained operators to run them. When the structure was torn down, these elevators disappeared along with it, closing a small but telling chapter in the city's history of technology.
